In Bernadette Anzengruber’s video performance Just a meaning that you attribute to it,viewers are already addressed by the title itself, and in fact we have to engage with our own notions right from the start. Is the young woman’s bust genuine or are there really perhaps false breasts hiding under the white T-shirt?

While the bust initially appears well-formed, the artist soon deranges it through ever wilder hopping and jumping. At some point we notice that the visibly strenuous act is not intended to show off the increasingly unnaturally distorted breasts, but rather to shake them off or get rid of them. Before this takes place, however, we must go through ten laborious minutes with the artist. The categories »artificial« and »natural«, however, play a subordinate role in the work. Attention is focused more on the artist’s struggle with her body, which she at first adapts to a fetishistic, perhaps more gratifying form inspired by wet T-shirt contests. As it turns out, the rules of the contest are reversed and the water is used not to make the bust stand out, but rather as a means for literally bursting the dream of a body conveyed by the media. For the artist’s part, the work on her body obviously leads to relief, and even the viewers feel a burden has been lifted from them at the end of the performance.
