In several works, Anna Artaker has examined the influence of films and photographs on the establishment and passing on of historical images. The artist is interested in political processes, phenomena of time, and social contexts that may be linked with images but are also overlain by them in the long run.

The research-oriented projects disclose historical contexts and expose notions of history as constructions of images and their power of meaning. The series Unknown Avant-garde comprises the reproduction of ten historical photographs of artists’ groups that until today – in the classic canon of art history – are among the avant-garde or the pioneers of Modernism in the 20th century. Each picture is accompanied by a caption describing the group (e.g. Dada, Surrealism, Bauhaus etc.), the place and time of the shot as well as the source of the photo and, with the silhouettes and the listed names, seems to designate exactly the people shown. However, this expectation is not fulfilled: while the photos, with one single exception, exclusively show men, the list contains exclusively women. Only the woman actually photographed in the group picture remains anonymous in the picture caption. This difference in information content gives rise to the various levels of meaning characteristic of this project: on the one hand, Artaker conveys the often forgotten or only seldom mentioned names of artists who were part of these groups as an unknown avantgarde, on the other hand she points to the interrelations between patterns of reception dominated by men and traditions of representation in art history.
