Anatoliy Babiychuk, aus der Serie / from the series

»Bergwerk« [Mine], 2008–2010

48 C-Prints, je 28,2 x 22,2 cm each

In his series Mine Anatoliy Babiychuk, who studies photography in Vienna, interleaves private and public themes: he examines both his own biography – more exactly, his father’s life, as he experienced it when he was a child – and the social and economic developments in present-day Ukraine.

His father worked as a miner for 40 years – a profession that was held in high esteem during Soviet times and endowed with privileges. This family connection provides the artist with access to an enterprise that symbolises the economy of the former Soviet Union. The entanglements of the old order (real socialism) with the new one (capitalism) mark the reality of the country today. Babiychuk chooses a pointed documentary style of colour photography, peacefully composed pictures of interior spaces, overviews of the area as well as some portraits, taken with a large-format analogue camera and presented in the tradition of the American New Topographics as a series of small prints. Instead of showing apparently artistic pictures, the photograph serves here as a historical document and as a medium with the capacity to allude to complex social developments in a picture series.
