Claudia Czimek’s work is inspired both in intellectual and practical terms by the concept of »bricolage«, as coined by French ethnologist Claude Lévi-Strauss. She uses existing »worlds« and materials as her source and plays with pictures, stories and associations.

The resulting micro-universes have a fantastic and alien air about them. Intricately crafted by hand as is habitual for »bricoleurs«, each environment bears the artist’s personal stamp and is unique in its way. The artist often puts in an appearance as an »inhabitant« of these modern curiosity cabinets, e.g. as Madame Bricolage, as a traveller who has ended up inside a whale or as a museum guide. Expo roulante – trans art, an exhibition on wheels, is Czimek’s latest work: it comprises a route, a travel box, an artwork and a woman. The transport box morphs into an art object and a miniature gallery, which is delivered to the exhibition by the artist herself, who eschews the expediency of air travel. The protective cover becomes a temporary home in her personal »minimundus world«. Her journey is interrupted for spontaneous presentations in public space, in front of interested audiences and in (or in front of) established museums. The outer limits of the exhibition space are marked by Linz at one end and Liverpool at the other; everything in between is part of the job. In addition to these two cities, the Expo roulante – trans art has so far stopped off in Essen, Duisburg, Paris and London.
