Carola Dertnig, »Dégueulasse«, 2009

Video, 10‘

Dégueulasse refers both in form and content to aspects of the history of performance. It consists of a carefully framed ten-minute take that records what happens on the stage from a static position offset slightly to the left.

Standing in a market hall in Vienna in a threefold frame of light and shadow, Dertnig paraphrases stage directions for a performative set-up. She mixes instructions, questions and maxims: »Ideas are one thing, and what happens to them is another thing.« Or: »If you do one thing for two minutes and you find it boring, do it for four minutes.« In addition to specially written text passages Dégueulasse features fragments of quotations by choreographer Simone Forti and from Jean- Luc Godard’s nouvelle-vague classic »À bout de souffle« and motion sequences from Yvonne Rainer’s dance video »Trio A«. It is, however, not the quotations as such that Dertnig wants to highlight or to present to the viewer for decoding. Instead, she generates added value through the elegant collage of her own set pieces and of those she has lifted from a wide range of different contexts, which in this reassembled form prove inaccessible to a causal reading. »Qu’est-ce que c’est dégueulasse?« asks Patricia Franchini, aka Jean Seberg, aka Carola Dertnig – and it is not only in Godard’s film that a clarifying statement is left to the recipients.
