Ines Doujak, »HERA«, 2008

In her work, Ines Doujak examines the construction of gender-specific and societal stereotypes and challenges hierarchical structures from a thoroughly feminist viewpoint. She does not limit herself to a particular medium, but rather uses photography, installations, collages and objects on an equal basis for her art.

For the TRIENNALE LINZ the artist has contributed a plaster sculpture: a white, kneeling female figure, in one hand a mirror, in the other a pair of tweezers, plucking a hair out of her chin. Her skirt is hiked up, exposing the figure’s upturned bottom. An obscene position? Rather, the intimate position of a woman who feels that no-one is observing her. One unexpected aspect of the sculpture is the incense that escapes from her anus from time to time. With the knowledge that the sculpture’s title is Hera, it acquires a completely different, more irritating significance. Inevitably one assumes that the title refers to the Greek goddess, whom we are not used to seeing portrayed in such a disrespectful pose. Ines Doujak shows HERA as an ordinary woman with beauty problems that are just as ordinary. The fact that the goddess was cheated on by her husband Zeus, the father of the gods, is after all not divine but rather a thoroughly ordinary fate. The only thing that is holy about HERA is the incense blowing out of her insides.
