Béatrice Dreux’s painterly oeuvre is extremely varied, which makes it difficult to describe in simple terms. Stylistically it includes figurative as well as abstract works, ranging from muted to very loud colours. There are self-portraits, sunsets and the visionary use of plant and animal motifs.

One is almost tempted to think that this is an artist still in search of her style, of her motifs. But Dreux has arrived all right. The ostensibly different paintings have much more in common than is apparent at first sight. Once you are inside Béatrice Dreux’s pictorial cosmos, the ruptures that seemed to exist disappear and what looked like risqué combinations are quickly seen to be logical and almost self-explanatory. For TRIENNALE LINZ the artist has again opted for the combination of several paintings. A large-format double portrait of herself and her daughter as monkeys is juxtaposed with one of her Cosmic paintings. The two complement each other and form a unit. It almost looks as if each of them were also contained in the other. If you zoom in on the double portrait and enlarge a square millimetre of the small monkey’s fur, what you get is the unfathomable depth of the cosmos in the picture of the nebulae alongside it. Dreux depicts what holds the world together in its innermost being.
