Manfred Erjautz’s varied oeuvre is distinguished by a playful exposure of everyday things and current social structures. The artist became known for his objects built out of Lego blocks: replicas of firearms, crucifixes and eucharistic objects.

The use of children’s toys robs the originals of their actual meaning and takes Frank Stella’s statement »What you see is what you see« ad absurdum. In addition to Legos as a building material, Erjautz’s work is dominated by mannequins. At the TRIENNALE LINZ the artist is presenting two life-size mannequins »dressed« in a way that is typical for him. As in the case of Erjautz’s earlier mannequins covered with corporate logos, Shelter also raises questions about the meaning of the surface layer. Are we dealing with a disguise that offers shelter, or is it a representation of the human body as an empty shell, a mere projection surface? Two resting animal tamers, loosely holding a lasso or having dropped one. The face masks seem to have slipped down against their will, yet without revealing their identity. Two figures as carriers of messages for reflecting on the world from which they come.
