Siegfried A. Fruhauf, »Camouflage«, 2010

Kleinbild-Diaprojektion in künstlichem Nebel / 35 mm slide projection in artificial fog

The starting point of Siegfried A. Fruhauf’s work is a structural examination of filmic characteristics. Film scraps or leftover footage is reassembled in a strictly choreographed sequence. In this media-analytical approach, the film leaves its illusionary space and showcases the fact that it has been made.

The translation of filmic projects into spatial analogies and the overcoming of the limits of the established film projection are further themes, above all of Fruhauf’s more recent installations. It is the fascination for film and cinema that is the driving force in his explorations of the hidden mechanisms of the living picture apparatus. The starting point of the new production Camouflage is the visualisation of all that would otherwise remain invisible. A slide of a zebra appears on the parking deck. A slide projection onto fog shows the projection beam and, like the black-and-white camouflage of the animal (which make the lines of the body blur when running), is a reference to cinematography, since, after all, it too deals with the pretension of movements.

(Genoveva Rückert)

The abstruse title Wk = mMv2/2 is the physical equation for a molecule’s kinetic energy, and it refers to the images shown in the film: They were created by zooming at coincidentally photographed individuals on postcards. As a result of the extreme enlargement, the grid of the cards’ printing is made clearly visible and the figures, many of which are only a few millimeters high in the original, are greatly abstracted.
