Personal experiences with architectural situations constitute the starting points of the projects that Gregor Graf develops by a targeted accessing of various media. In most cases, he then also realises his projects as space-related models in the exhibition context. Graf’s oeuvre so far comprises drawings, photographs and installations that generally take up and transform site-specific information.

In the photographic work Hidden Town, begun in 2004, Graf offers a view of a city purged of signs. Through retouching of the posters, advertising slogans, business names, logos etc, Graf increasingly highlights the architectural and structural characteristics of situations in Linz, Warsaw and London. Through the absence of human beings and any form of traffic, the places are also largely deprived of any identity or name. By erasing an informative level of common sign systems Graf discloses formal and plastic qualities of urban building units. The houses and streets now assume an increasingly exemplary character. Since familiar references are missing, the public space leaves an unreal, culturally interchangeable and strange impression. Graf’s method creates transformed patterns of perception of urban spaces. His pictures shift between a construction and deconstruction of reality. Through the artist’s intervention in the information content of a photograph, these pictures clarify the sign’s power of definition for the function of a city as an urban field of activity.
