Elke Groen, »NightStill«, 2007

35 mm, 9’

Accompanied by tentative sounds, flocks of clouds scurry over the crest of the Dachstein mountain range. In the distant windows of lonely upper cable-car stations, lights flash like Morse code. Gondolas whizz past like strange flying objects. Rocky crags are blanketed in thick layers of fog. Now and then a phantom-like human figure appears in the whiteness of the snow. The moon rises, glows, falls and disappears – only to rise again..

NightStill by Elke Groen is a nine-minute filmic stock-taking exercise of the Dachstein region. Far from being a documentary, »NightStill« confronts the given (the landscape, artefacts, living beings, the sky, weather phenomena and light) with a recording technique that has always been remarkable for its ability to alienate. With the exception of a sequence shot with a webcam, all the special effects were done using an »old spring-wound Bolex«. The film was shot during two winters, preferably in nights when the moon was full. Each frame was exposed for half a minute, which means that each second of film time in fact stores twelve minutes of real time, and each minute twelve hours. In this compacted form the mountain massif appears doubly static, while the play of light and motion gains in dynamics and in transitoriness. Night is turned into day and the moon looks down on the snow-packed slopes as a wintry sun. And we are at the centre of all this and shake our heads in joyful astonishment.
