»The central theme of my work is landscape. This does not imply, however, that I do pictures of landscapes, but rather, I employ landscape in order to create pictures,« admits Gerd Hasler in a statement expressing his attitude as visual artist working predominantly with photography.

Apart from an additional course in philosophy and art history in Vienna, Gerd Hasler did his photographic training mainly in England, and primarily in London. This may be worthy of note, above all because landscape in the Anglo-Saxon world has been a continuing theme of visual art, in contrast to Austria (where it has partly been affected by the negative notion of »Heimat« influenced by the Third Reich). Hasler’s landscape pieces (also from the Alpine area) certainly show specific locations, but the depictions do not focus on mere representation. Rather it is an interplay of description and abstraction that is implied, a permanent shifting between the levels of real and media-related appearance. The aesthetics in his large-format panel paintings are often marked by painterly or sculptural effects and are exclusively based on his insistence on the pictorial language inherent in the medium of photography (detail, perspective, exposure time, enlargement).
