Marlene Hausegger, »Flags«, 2009

Acryl, Klebeband auf Holz / Acrylic, duct tape on wood

200 x 60 cm, 155 x 70 cm

Going through the world with open eyes: as an artist Marlene Hausegger has, unlike most of us, managed to hang on to this childlike skill. Tongue in cheek, she transforms objects and places in urban contexts into something new, with a lick of paint, a couple of sheets of paper and a roll of duct tape. She makes visible what used to be invisible.

A zebra crossing is given its missing legs and head overnight, and a moribund tree gets a new green crown made from cardboard. In addition to these performances, which the artist records on film, she also makes sculptures. For TRIENNALE LINZ Marlene Hausegger combines photographic work with objects dealing with the themes of grip and mental and physical health. The winner’s podium with its semicircular base will make the triumph a very wobbly affair. The flags, which do not match any actual state, need to be propped up in order to remain standing; a gust of wind and the state symbols would all be on the floor. The photographic work complements these themes. A mattress on snow-covered cobblestones with colourful oars made of cardboard stands for life-threatening attempts to escape hunger and destitution. The clouds that have fallen from the sky float in the lake like lost dreams. Despite their playfulness Hausegger’s works are consistently marked by a critical attitude towards the prevailing system..
