What motivates Susi Jirkuff to focus on the phenomenon of pop music is above all her interest in the way this media represents everyday life and social structures. That a thoroughly commercialised and relentlessly stylised product like a pop song should be expressive of (almost) all intense emotions, from being in love to rebelliousness, is paradoxical and highly ambivalent. A perfect piece of music creates a semblance of intimacy.

Musicians represent the likewise paradoxical tradition of holding up their most intimate moments for public inspection, as super-authentic personages on the one hand and at the same time as unapproachable individuals, who the recipient can never get in touch with in the normal course of things. This discrepancy, however, is obscured completely because »it is a constitutive component of all pop music that at no stage of the performance does it ever become unambiguously clear whether the person who does the talking is performing a role or is being themselves as a real person.« (Diedrich Diederichsen). The third element that, according to Susi Jirkuff, is needed to make the relationship between musician and recipient complete is a room of one’s own. The spatial installation In my room is a symbol of the place where one retreats into one’s »true self«; this is where all the emotions experienced with the interpreter are played out. As she herself belongs to a generation for whom the immersion in pop music was a formative experience, the project, last but not least, is to do with the search for original emotions, stereotypes of love and myths of rebellion.

A group of drama students directed by Diana Jirkuff will be singing the Beach Boys’ song In my room at the opening of the exhibition.
