Johanna Kirsch’s work is about exploring the gaps or blank spaces whose spatial interplay with social structures gives rise to autonomy and self-definition, and it is about experimenting with existing rules, limits and norms. In her open-ended self-experiments Kirsch reveals the possibilities, the realms of experience that result from the simple bodily appropriation of space (by walking or climbing).

These performative acts may turn into regular expeditions, which are then recorded in a kind of diary or log and may be developed into video installations. For TRIENNALE LINZ Kirsch has developed a performative work dealing with the car: in a performance with running commentary the artist explores a car that here is to be considered as part of the expanded body. The body becomes part of the machine and vice versa. We – that is, the machine – demand road space, parking space, oil reserves; we structure our social, economic and recreational spaces for the car and via the car. And it is by car that we leave our traffic-infested cities in search of relaxation and recovery.

Johanna Kirsch also contributes a kind of music video clip: on the basis of an attempt to generalise the characteristics of individual nations and to extend them to the whole world, an extraterrestrial TV news anchor reads out surrealist, Dadaist comments on space, time, history, and everyday events (illustrated with pictures by Katrin Plavcak and by heterogeneous material partly downloaded from the Internet).
