Paul Kranzler, »Vater im begehbaren Schrank sitzend mit Fuchspelz meiner Mutter« [Father sitting in walk-in cupboard with my mother’s fox fur coat] (Detail), Hörsching 2007, aus der Serie / from the series »Brùt«, 2004–2009

C-Prints · Foto hier / Photo above: 100 x 130 cm

It is obvious in his books, for example in »Land of Milk and Honey« (2005) and »Tom« (2007): Paul Kranzler is interested in human beings. His pictures, mostly in series, tell stories, relentlessly, brutally and tenderly at the same time. All these artworks show the photographer’s talent in creating atmospheres that – despite all drastic effect – allow for open and intimate images.

So Brùt deals with his family, of which he has taken many thousands of pictures since 2004 – about 120 of them are published in the eponymous book, publication date summer 2010. With a strong pictorial instinct, Kranzler shows human beings and living spaces in rural Austria on the margins of conurbations – close views of everyday life realities, hardly seen in Austrian photography. »Pictures on the occasion of the 90th birthday of my grandfather, beside him at the dinner table, at his left sits aunt Christi, his sister, and to his right his half-sister aunt Traudi. His father was the illegitimate child of a maidservant in Gutau in the »Mühlkreis« area, my great-grandfather grew up there and was even successful as an entrepreneur in the city. . . . In the living-room my father likes to show slides he took in the 1970s in the United States. He says that the town of Traun was Austria’s Los Angeles, and he is not altogether wrong there.« (P. K.)
