The quick brown foy jumps over the lazy dog, 2009

Johann Lurf’s film with the swaggering title sets out to deconstruct conventions of filmic narrative. Stills from classic movies – ranging from title to final credits, perforations and all – are mounted one after another in a rhythmic sequence. Image and soundtrack are highly fragmented so that it is impossible to discern any traditional filmic action. A sequence of black frames is followed by one consisting of title fragments; then come snippets of characters in different groups and engaged in different activities. Lurf’s film uses the structures of a classic movie even if the highly erratic mounting of the individual frames deconstructs the way a movie typically unfolds.

12 Explosions, 2008

Six minutes, twelve explosions: Lurf’s film is a sequence of tableaux shot in Vienna by night. A brief lull is followed by an explosion of some sort. The bang of the explosion triggers a cut to a different perspective on the same setting. These cuts pass unnoticed because the spectator’s attention is absorbed by the optical and acoustic commotion caused by the explosion going off in public space. Could it be that the very title is misleading? How many explosions are there in all? Immaculately crafted and a kind of visual experience that has no parallel: this is what experimental cinema is all about.
