Sabine Marte, »b-star, untötbar!« [b-star, unkillable!], 2009

Video, 7‘30‘‘

At first all that can be seen is an overexposed picture of a woman’s torso; all that can be heard is rustling, crashing and voices. Finally the picture of a woman – the artist herself – takes form, a voice begins to speak, but the woman does not move her lips and looks intently at the camera.

This situation does not change during the course of the video, whereas the setting (a couch in an attic) experiences constant manipulation: as if animated by a ghostly hand, the couch slides forwards and backwards through the room. The borders between the real world and the world of film are expanded and finally dissolve. If the protagonist can break through between these spaces – embedded in narrative (and especially acoustic) references to horror films – if she can narratively and literally overcome both inside and out, she will be on the way, in Butler’s sense, to completing other forms of identity differentiation. b-star, unkillable! can be seen as a transgressive figure, which is remixed, resurrects, and returns in countless films. The economic principle of (re)usability, which is carried to extremes in these films, experiences in this form a rebellious re-valuation including a consolidated happy ending.
