Mara Mattuschka / Chris Haring, »Burning Palace«, 2009

35 mm, colour, stereo, 28’

Mara Mattuschka occupies a special position in the TRIENNALE LINZ selection due to her double function as painter and filmmaker and her work which has also influenced subsequent artists through its permeability and performativity.

Mattuschka’s current painting refers to her last film »Burning Palace«. At the beginning of the film, the actors are »awoken« from their rigid position for a dream. In the new pictures the artist continues to dream, she »dreams« herself into the body of Gollum (Lord of the Rings) or Master Yoda (Star Wars). According to the artist, a film represents an autonomous, virtual universe that can be arbitrarily rethought or extended to other media. In the case of »Burning Palace«, however, there is only one constant that cannot be overcome: nobody acting in this film or getting into it by chance can ever leave the »Burning Palace« hotel. The installative hanging of the pictures and the integrated projection of the film cause a burning »palace« to arise around the viewer that guarantees a stay in the »bowels of lust« (Katherina Zakravsky).

In addition, a tribute has been organised for Mattuschka with a selection of her filmic work, which will be showcased on the occasion of opening of the summer cinema underneath the stars of the TRIENNALE LINZ .
