Sissa Micheli, »investigating room 45«, 2008/2009

Videoinstallation mit Monitor und Lampen, Video PAL im Loop, Farbe, Ton, / Video installation with monitor and lamps; video PAL in loop, colour, sound, 5’55”

A telephone rings. Background music heightens the suspense. Our curiosity is aroused. We are tempted to move up to the TV , where the sounds are coming from. The TV is circled by a string of small lamps whose light cones are pointing downwards.

The TV shows scenes that are hard to decipher: a woman appears to be looking for something; she crosses empty rooms; she puts on rubber boots; she runs up and down stairs. All these mysterious comings and goings are enhanced by music. What is going to happen next? Sissa Micheli’s installation investigating room 45 parodies the thriller. All its elements, from the music and the trench coat of the woman sleuth to the light cones of the lamps, are borrowed from well-known thrillers. In Micheli’s installation the suspense keeps rising but there is no resolution in sight. Sissa Micheli’s artistic method is predicated on storytelling. Both her photo series on the one hand and her installations and videos on the other rely heavily on narrative. The artist herself assumes a number of different roles, usually female stereotypes, which are in keeping with the specific environment both optically and poetically. The events and locations that support and direct her stories are real. Viewers are given ample opportunity to draw on their own past, on their emotions and experiences, and to connect to the work of art. One story here equals many different ones.
