Gerlinde Miesenböck, aus der Serie / from the series »Das Erbe« [The Heritage], 2008–2010

C-Prints · je 64 x 64 cm each

The photographic works by Gerlinde Miesenböck are subjective, mostly autobiographically marked examinations of her immediate environment. Landscape, home country and family are critically reflected. The photographer extends the documentary utilisation of the medium through cautious (self) stagings.

Between 2008 and 2010, she created The Heritage on places of her childhood and with family members as actors. These pictures trace on the basis of her own family moments about the essence of this social system. The rooms, gestures and colours of the shots speak of the various parallel realities of living together: the family as a place of security, as hierarchic construct, as institution in flux. Families construct and reaffirm themselves not least by family photographs, just as they also fill up the background of many pictures in The Heritage. The historical shots serve as time windows into the past, reflecting the individual in this community. They become points of reference, of attraction and rejection. The pictorial spaces are full of allusions, they allow one to sense continuities, contradictions and fractures between the generations. As stagings, these personal approaches or alienations are some kind of seismographic recording of the doubt about traditional family structures, even though these pictures work in a different way than documentary photographs do.
