Barbara Musil works as a freelance artist in the fields of conceptual and experimental art and is especially interested in video, new media and art in the public sphere. Barbara Musil’s animation Journal du temps combines picture material collected by the artist during her own travels with excerpts from the writings of two world-famous chroniclers.

In quick succession you cross entire continents in their company, staying in a different place every day and plunging from one extreme into another. The various places you are taken to on these flying visits remain uncommented on – you have to leave before you get half a chance to see anything – except for one tiny segment of reality: the weather. The vagaries of local weather are treated here as the key theme and are expanded on down to the last detail. For this purpose the artist draws on consistently abridged versions of the travel diaries of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and Alexander von Humboldt. All other sights, be they ever so unusual, remarkable, novel, are ignored; they are sacrificed to the caprices of weather. In a helplessly whimsical manner the narrator clings to one aspect of reality, whose presence, regardless of its constant mutability, is the only constant in his tour de force across the climes of the world. It is only fitting that a lullaby, characterised as it is by its genre-specific ambivalent mood, should be the musical travelling companion.
