Sarah Ortmeyer is presenting three works at the TRIENNALE , which were created separately from one another but form a convincing unity when combined. All three are based on the theme of resistance, which the artist has handled in a way both subtle and poetic.

For the video 1789 ÈTOILES ROUGES POUR PARIS, Ortmeyer dropped 1789 red paper stars from the Eiffel tower and filmed this quiet yet risky action from various positions. The work FIST consists of a display case containing four matchboxes with pictures of clenched fists of famous people from American history. Kennedy-assassin Lee Harvey Oswald, athlete Tommie Smith, George W. Bush and Michelle and Barack Obama demonstrate this powerful symbol, but with very different statements in each case. The display case is surrounded by hundreds of fragmented wooden shoes, or »sabots«. French workers began their revolutionary strikes by throwing their shoes into the machines, which brought production to a standstill. The images that Sarah Ortmeyer communicates in her work are simple and profound at the same time. They fascinate the onlookers, make them smile and inspire reflection. The discreetly opened matchboxes among the wooden shoes acts as a pictorial metaphor for a leaping spark and an easily ignited revolution.
