Walter Benjamin once remarked of the photographer Eugène Atget that his pictures of a deserted finde- siecle Paris looked like crime scenes.

The performance documentation Body Trail plays with precisely this feeling of eeriness, which arises from static long shots of empty front doors, walls of posters that have been torn down, parks at night and desolate telephone booths. Suddenly a leg projects out of the telephone booth, balls of people roll like piles of garbage in front of lowered storefronts, apparently lifeless figures lie face down in front of garage entrances. Is this human garbage the victims of urban violence? In quick cutaways, people run through Vienna at night, their faces held in freeze frames over and over, as if a CCTV camera were looking for prey. But what looks like a crime scene proves to be a production design by the choreographer Willi Dorner. The tangled masses of people suddenly form themselves into orderly stacks of bodies, or hands and feet find their way back into whole forms. Then in turn the artists lie in file on the pavement, crowded together like silver spoons in a little chest. Dorner’s multilayered urban intervention shifts between surreal humour and dark visions of terror; it owes its dynamic, filmic clarity, however, to the incisive editing and atmospherically precise sound by Michael Palm.
