Maria Petschnig, »KIP MASKER«, 2007

Video, 3‘25‘‘

The sound of soft breathing accompanies this sculptural performance, in which items of intimate lingerie such as bras and corsets are pulled over bare skin – not always on those parts of the body that you’d expect in the context. The filmic realisation of these experimental bondage pictures falls far short of total readability owing to the fact that it does not include the ambience and because of the unusual frame croppings.

What we see are body details that the perspectival tricks of close-up or twisted camera angles have transformed into pieces of a puzzle: flesh that resists the commodifying tutelage of body shapers; torsos squeezed, tied up, hemmed in by bras, latex bodices, tights and other insignia of feminity, partly charged with fetishistic overtones. The fact that these lingerie items do not fit – and they do not fit in a double sense – also points to a playful and subversive treatment of the critique directed at the commodification of the female body. The latently repressive way in which they are forced to fit in a certain sense also reflects on the objects themselves: the artist as a performer stretches and pulls them out of shape; and in her second role as a video artist she directs the medialised gaze at the tied-up, Hans Bellmeresque body of a puppet.
