Andrew Phelps, »Baghdad Suite, Nr. 2« aus der Serie / from the series »Baghdad Suite«, 2008

8 C-Prints · je 50 x 60 cm each

For two years Andrew Phelps worked on a series near his birthplace Mesa, Arizona, which he then published in a book entitled »Higley«.

Higley, formerly a small village with few inhabitants on the margin of urban conurbations in the Phoenix area, has literally dissolved in the course of the brief »real-estate development«. The agricultural areas and old settlement structures have given way to the dream of owning a lavish house of one’s own – a dream financed in most cases by speculation. Suburbia and the network of commercial amenities of malls, shops, cinemas and restaurants are constantly growing. On one of his recent visits to Higley, Phelps accidentally came across the 600-metre-long film set of an Arabian city. In the setting sun he quickly shot off the last eight frames of his film before the security guards chased him away. One day later the buildings were demolished, a heap of wood carried away by trucks. The eight pictures, which Phelps eventually summarised under the title Baghdad Suite, are for him a personal, admittedly surrealist experience with the still continuing war in Iraq. The »war on terror» is basically conveyed through media images, which again mostly only depict façades and stereotypes of a different culture. It is left for us to decide which film was taken on the sets of Baghdad Suite.
