Katrin Plavcak is well known for her expressive, gestural figurative paintings that usually develop along a narrative structure. Plavcak also has an oeuvre of sculptures and installations, which facilitates a better understanding of her paintings in terms of their narrative component and their spatial and compositional structure.

On the occasion of TRIENNALE LINZ an attempt will be made, using an intermedial work, to trace the trajectory of the journey from installation to painting. This is where Plavcak’s predilection for outer space comes in useful. Outer space even today stands for immeasurable distances and an alien environment hostile to man, while at the same time, as the epitome of a space waiting to be colonised and shaped, it invites projections motivated by longing and a sense of adventure. The artist took her cue from a historical event: as part of the »Man High« experiment, which proposed studying the effects of extreme altitudes on the human body, on 16 August 1960 »Excelsior III «, a helium-filled balloon, took Joe Kittinger to an altitude of 31,300 metres (102,800 feet). After jumping from the balloon he fell for four minutes and 36 seconds, reaching a maximum speed of 988 km/h (614mph), before opening his parachute at 5,500 metres (18,000 feet). Kittinger set new records for highest balloon ascent, highest parachute jump, longest free fall and fastest speed reached by a human being.
