Adnan Popović, »Laokoongruppe: Walzerkönig« [Laokoongruppe: King of the Waltz], 2008

Musikvideo / Music video, 5´

The music of »Laokoongruppe«, aka Karl Schwamberger, combines the most diverse musical points of reference in a highly original manner. The bass drum thumps out a beer-tent techno beat, while Schwamberger’s vocals, zooming in on the listener almost irritatingly closely, mix fragments of a pop idiom with samples of Schubert, Bruckner and free-jazz passages.

Popovic has chosen a writing desk as a setting for the accompanying video, complete with paper clips, coffee cup, Post-it notes, highlighters, small figurines and a cash register featuring a ticker tape for the song lyrics. The props are occasionally re-arranged on this unpretentious puppet stage by the arm of the director. The resulting animated video consists of roughly 5,000 drawings photographed by a digital camera in stop-motion mode. The drawings refer, first, to the classic »on the road« pop culture iconography, which in this case takes the form of a reckless close-up, psychedelically enhanced tour through the country of the »King of the Waltz« (represented by highlighter drawings on memos); second, to the usual representation of music in terms of music video aesthetics, realised through the finely drawn movements of the singer’s animated figure on yellow Post-its; and, lastly, to music production and music consumption venues, visualised by paper clips pulsating to varying volume levels and the miniature model of a disco at the end.
