Gregor Sailer, »Nösslachjoch« aus der Serie / from the series »LADIZ_alpen™«, 2006

C-Prints · je 54,5 x 69,5 cm each

Ladiz is the name of an alp that was owned by the Sailer family until it was gambled away at the card tables 150 years ago.« With photo-technical perfection the series documents the tourism industry in Tyrol: architecture and the technology to transport people into the high mountains and provide them with mass entertainment on the one hand, and to keep the negative consequences of all this within bounds on the other hand: lift facilities and avalanche barriers, gastronomy and glacier covers.

From distance, the transitions from relatively untouched to sport- and »event spaces« become understandable, partly they blur in the long-exposure, available-light shots. In contrast with the elaborate Alpine photo expeditions of the 19th century, the large-format photographer nowadays has his own means of transport, which he documents. Accordingly, his pictures show a certain »grandeur«, derived from the infrastructure. From the comprehensive series, only the night shots are exhibited here, clarifying how the capitalisation of the mountains is further exploited by the nightly »programme«. Whereas the visitors previously retreated from the summits at dusk, back to the valley, now an advertising hoarding suddenly glares out of the artificial light, simultaneously representing the driving force of affluence for entire regions. Sailer also remains open for these effects provided by the commercialisation of the mythical Alpine picture. Through crystal-clear air, the beams of floodlights allow archaic mountain worlds to glow like majestic arenas out of darkness.
