Hans Schabus is interested in bodies and their relationships to the spaces that surround them. How space influences a person is a central question that the artist tries to explore in his work. It is especially the dimensions of space that are beyond human understanding, as well as the vertical axes of space, that play a role in his artistic work.

What connects all his work is on the one hand the use of materials already at hand and on the other the scrutiny of certain spaces or of space per se. In order to make the dimensions comprehensible and their influence on the person visible, Schabus resorts to the displacement of objects. Through repositioning a sailing boat in the Vienna canal system, a container in a gallery or hundreds of chairs on museum walls, it becomes possible for observers to consider things outside their context and experience in a new way how these relate to their own bodies. Even the stairs that Hans Schabus is showing at the TRIENNALE LINZ , which come from his parents’ farmhouse, are robbed of their original function. In their horizontal position they no longer serve to connect up and down. Instead of providing a link between two levels, they are themselves a symbol of a mixture of past and present, of space and time.
