Six/Petritsch, »Ohne Titel (Salomon August Andrée)« [Untitled (Salomon August Andrée)], 2007

Digitale Bleistiftzeichnungen auf Papier, Blatt #3 der Serie »Nordpol«, je 70 x 100 cm / Digital pencil drawings on paper, Sheet #3 of the series North Pole, 70 x 100 cm each

What kind of rapport do we establish with our environment and what is that rapport based on? The artist duo Nicole Six and Paul Petritsch repeatedly raise the question of the standpoint of the subject, its constitutive conditions and variable parameters, which are then subjected to testing in the course of a project and to significant interventions at one of the emerging breaks.

In an original conceptual approach, which involves using one’s (own) body, they explore elements of Concept Art, Land Art and Institutional Critique. Their project for TRIENNALE LINZ continues this tradition by adding the element of the expedition, the search for an allegedly existent goal: Untitled is a six-part series of drawings based on the travel accounts of the polar explorers Julius Payer, Fridtjof Nansen, Salomon August Andrée (North Pole) and Ernest Henry Shackleton, Roald Amundsen and Robert Falcon Scott (South Pole). The drawings are true-to-scale representations of the routes taken by the different explorers. Salomon August Andrée’s North Pole expedition in the hydrogen balloon »Örnen« began on 11 July 1897 and ended in October of the same year with the death of all three participants. The expedition’s last camp, on White Island, together with its photo material was not found until 1930.

Untitled is accompanied by Fog, a person’s persistent attempts recorded on video to find his/her way and to determine his/her position.
