In her media-analytical performances and with a twinkle in her eye, the photographer and video artist, formerly a dancer herself, examines the use of bodies and the functionalities of pictorial spaces. Through acting with objects she conceives images of a universe at first seemingly circling around itself, which actually alludes to pictorial worlds of Constructivism and Dadaism.

The flashing of the coloured elements in the dark pictorial spaces is precisely composed, while the actors have seemingly stopped at the crucial moment between exposing and hiding. The variations of colours and forms, of standstill and movement give the impression of documents of a test set-up reduced to absurdity. These are single pictures, series and triptychs between implied drama and wit, between the baroque fall of the folds and a bathing cap. But the confusion is precisely measured, the clowning never descends into slapstick. Emptiness and opulence, presence and absence are subtly balanced. The classical means of a balanced picture composition are employed. Posed fabrics, gestures and mimicry hint at art-historical patterns, but the attempts of the viewers to attribute meaning to them fail or else lead into artificial meta spaces. On the self-referential stages, the bodies appear object-like in their monochrome clothes, like abstractions of themselves. Scopes of action become mere pictorial spaces, an ambivalence arises between staging and representation. Possibly, Nina Rike Springer’s pictures are also simply good parodies of interpretations fraught with meaning of staged photography.
