The film and photographic works by Borjana Ventzislavova focus on physical and psychic demarcations, migration issues and their structural conditions as a consequence of the distribution of power and property.

The series shows people wading alone or in groups at night through waist-high water, plastic sacks in their hands. These pictures are associated with flight and displacement. Yet these visual codes are torn apart by the appearance of protagonists whose clothes and gestures indicate that they belong to the upper middle class. This irritation creates a different perception of the pictures, as staged; a proximity to theatrical, filmic, even photographic pictorial words is revealed. Water constitutes the all-embracing background of the series, enclosing and connecting the protagonists. It eventually shades off into dark night skies. As an ambivalent motif, water is on the one hand a life-giving ancient element and archaic constant, on the other hand it symbolises change, being-in-flux or it grows into life-threatening tidal waves. Ventzislavova’s artistic stagings are symbols of existential moments of whichever kind, whether these are crises of the social system, of the affluent society and of complacency, or inward landscapes, a burn-out or catastrophic landscapes of climate change, maybe also those of a cathartic turn.
