»Photography is to be met with the utmost mistrust« is the subtitle of Martin Vesely’s artistic statement Materialisations, and this might be understood as general plea and personal claim. Working autodidactically as a photographer, the artist has examined the »real world« – the Alpine and urban area – from scratch.

He made very early use of a class of art and photography at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. What remained from that was his use of a 8 x 10-inch large-format camera, an apparatus that not only requires a slowing-down of the shooting process (and thereby constantly raises the question of the exact location), but also allows for very high-resolution photography. The materiality – immanent in the 20x25 cm film format – is used by the artist to balance colour with light through the structuring of the analogue silver grain. Atmospheric aspects have an extraordinary significance here. The photograph is extended by hand-made iron frames endowing his pictures with an object quality. Martin Vesely also constructs light objects that have their own aura as autonomous artworks and allow for an ideal light situation for (art) spaces and their works (and thus also for his own presentations). In general, the artist finds his pictorial worlds at locations in which history (also that of the individual medium) has left an inscription. In addition, the relationship between art and craftsmanship not only plays a role in his motifs (the cast monuments), but also as part of his own artistic strategy.
