Anna Witt, »Empower me!«, 2007

Video and Installation

Courtesy Galerie Michael Wiesehöfer, Cologne

Anna Witt’s contribution to the TRIENNALE LINZ is an installation consisting of a video projection and written panels. The video shows Anna Witt accosting passers-by and asking whether they would be willing to be taken hostage.

The artist holds extensive conversations with the individual volunteers about the demands that the purported victims are themselves allowed to make. Together they write the panels with the names and the demands. The »hostages« are subsequently blindfolded, Anna Witt covers her face, picks up a fake weapon and holds the panel up in front of the camera: a scene like those familiar to us from news reports about kidnappings. The clever reversal of victim and perpetrator, of staging and real needs is at once surprising and touching. People volunteer to be taken hostage, in order to be able to convey their own wishes and concerns. The human being as an individual and as part of society is the focal point of Anna Witt’s work. Her actions, in which she addresses complete strangers in the street and asks them about their worries, concerns and fears, or transgresses personal, intimate boundaries through physical contact, create interpersonal relationships that are unusual in our society or are even taboo. Life itself thus becomes the modest protagonist.
