Andrea Witzmann at first studied architecture before she attended a newly established class for photography and art at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. Consequently, from the beginning the artist used her work to examine the phenomenon of »space«.

In photography, she found the means to order the world and question spaces according to their functionality, their history and their cultural code. Inside and outside, the real and the imaginary, the near and the distant, the natural and the artificial, the two-dimensional and the plastic represent the parameters of her search for certain spatial situations. In her exploration of (non-)places (better described by the French »Les Lieux du Non-Lieu«, which also represents a certain, topographically oriented photographic attitude) she successfully creates pictures that transform themselves from their ordinariness into virtually stage-like, associative pictorial spaces. Behind their surfaces these spaces extracted from the real world conceal complex levels of meaning. It is her approach of allowing room for this enigmatic in the ordinary, the »spirit of the place«, that constitutes the surrealist element in her work: thus Andrea Witzmann positions herself in the tradition, for example, of Eugène Atget or Walker Evans.
