OK | Ryan Gander
- Ryan Gander /UK
Feb 13, 2015 - Apr 28, 2015
Opening: Thurs., 12. February 2015, 7.00 PM
The acclaimed British concept artist Ryan Gander is a provocative master of the art of narrative, irony and wordplay. As part of an international cooperation with art institutions in Europe, North America and Asia, the OK presents the first major survey exhibition of the artist in the German-speaking region.
The exhibition shows the two current themes in Gander’s work: “Imagineering” [a combination of “imagination” and “engineering”] and “Culturefield”.
The exhibition will show expansive installation works like the hundreds of arrows Ftt, Ft, Ftt, Ftt, Ffttt, Ftt,…, 2010 , but also subtle concept works and videos (Things that mean things and things that look like they mean things).
Gander is one of the most fascinating personalities in the art world today. He refuses to be pinned down, neither in style nor in medium. Some of his works do not even look like art, others appear to be simple, but they are not.
Ryan Gander finds themes and inspiration in everyday life – like his four-year-old daughter’s tents – which he translates into sculptures in marble. Especially for the exhibition he is also creating trashy, new lamp sculptures for his wife (A lamp made by the artist for his wife: 44th, 47th, 49th, 50th attempts). His strongly autobiographical works are marked by a pleasurable playing with valuation, the long history of the use of everyday material (ready-mades) in art, but also by the direct, creative process and, not least of all, his personal life.
Gander is not only an unusually complex artist, but also an inspiration for his surroundings. He provided the British government (Department of Business, Innovation and Skills) with the professionally produced advertising campaign “Imagineering” (which welcomes exhibitions visitors right at the entrance to the OK), which promotes preserving childhood imagination to shape a better future.
The broad scope of his work is also evident in the 288-page publication “Culturefield”, produced in conjunction with the cooperation.
RYAN GANDER (*1976, lives and works in London) studied at the Manchester Metropolitan University, the Jan Van Eyck Academy, Maastricht (1999–2000), and the Rijksakademie, Amsterdam (2001–2002). His works have been shown in the CCA Wattis Institute, San Francisco 2007, the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam 2007, the Tate Britain, London 2006, and the MUMOK, Vienna 2006, among others. For the dOCUMENTA 13, 2013 he designed a breeze that was blown into the rooms through the slots of a hidden ventilator.
